First, you will need to download mIRC. The table below will show you how. If you are using AOL, you must use the Windows 3.1x version, unless you have AOL for Windows 95 (the 32 bit version).
Windows 3.1x | Windows 95 |
If you are using Netscape,
put your cursor on the link, hold the shift key down, and left click.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer, right click on the link, choose "Save
target as". Remember the directory you save it to, as you will need to
access this file again later.

Now that you have the file, you need to install it.
Open File Manager (or Windows Explorer in Win 95), go to the directory where you downloaded it to, and double click on the file (mirc511s.exe for Win 3.1x or mirc511t.exe for Win 95).
This will bring up an install window. It's best to install it to the directory that's already showing (c:\mirc), but if you want to change it, click the browse button and find the directory of your choice.
Once installed, your new mIRC program group window will popup. Click on the mIRC 5.11 icon to start mIRC.
Once started, a window will popup with a picture of Khaled Mardam-Bey, the guy who invented mIRC
(don't let him scare you).
This window will also give you information about registering this great shareware program
($20 U.S.).
Close this window, and another will come up. This is the Setup Options window. In this window, there are spaces for you to enter some information.
In the box that says "Full Name", you can enter your real name (though, we would advise against that) or pretty much anything you want. Same for the E-mail address box.
In the "Nickname" box, enter your nickname. This is the name that people will see and refer to you as, so pick something that you like. "Alternate" is for if your first choice of nicknames is already taken.
Now, look at the top of the Setup Options window. There will be a box with something like "Random DALNet Server" in it. Open the list, and find "Anothernet : US, CA, Morgan Hill" or "Anothernet : US, VT, Burlington" (the one for Los Angeles is no longer operational), then click on "Connect to IRC server", and you're on! Relatively painlessly too.
Once all the info (called the MOTD - Message Of The Day) stops scrolling on your screen, type /join #parentskitchen (or a different channel). If you would like a list of all the channels, type /list
Once you chat for a while and decide you'd like to customize your mIRC more, you can download the mIRC FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). It is offered in help format (which can be accessed right from mIRC) or in write format. If you get the help version, unzip it right into your mIRC directory and it will be accessible from the "help" option on the menubar.
