Posted by Joan on February 26, 1999 at 17:35:10:You need paper coffee filters (small ones for small critters, big ones for big critters) clothes pins, water color paints, water, brushes, chenille stems or construction paper and scissors.
Give child the flattened coffee filter and let them paint it all over with the watercolors. The runnier the better, use lots of water. The colors will soak and streak into the paper, the wetter the paint, the more it runs. When they are finished, allow it to dry completely.
While its drying let child paint the clothespin, or pick a plastic one in a color they like.
when the filter is dry, pleat it and fold it, gathering in the center to make a bow tie shape. Pinch the gathered area in the clothes pin. Use the chenille stems, or cut some strips of construction paper to make antenea and legs, glue on, allow to dry.
If you like, you can glue some magnetic strip to the bottom of your butterfly to make a magnet!
