Weirdest thing - holding saliva in her mouth

My daughter currently developed this thing with holding saliva in her mouth. I thought at first she was holding food and just didn't want to spit it out. I would carry her to the garbage or to the toilet to spit it out and she just didn't want to do it or I would hold a tissue to her mouth so she can release the fluid but she still did not want to. Yes, she can be stubborn and very independent (for her age) to the point where she likes to do things on her own - but not this, she would continue to keep the saliva in her mouth. It is now going on 1 week since I've noticed that she's been doing this and I really don't know how this came about. Does anyone have a child or know of another parent with a child who is going through this. For information purposes my daughter is 2 1/2 and goes to my grandmother's house while I am at work - there aren't any other kids around. She's getting ready to start school come September. Any advice you may have is welcomed. Thanks!
