we always tell our daughter (8yo)that her words work much better than whining and crying. she doesn't get what she wants if she wines because we can't understand what she is saying. if she uses her words, and tells us what she wants she has a better chance. if she wines, we make up her mind for her (just like you have to with a baby), and usually its not what she wanted. she still wines occasionally, but most of the time, she uses words to explain what she wants or doesn't want to do.
