I have a rat terrier also. Ever since she was a puppy she would periodically have a breathing "attack" (for lack of a better word) when she was sleeping. She would breath in very rapidly, as if she can't get enough air. She would make a gasping/sucking sound. This usually would last for several minutes (seems like forever), and then would be fine. Now at three years she has these less often. I believe they are related to allergies. She has many!! I started making my own dog food 2 years ago and this has helped her alot.
