Amish Bread Starter
1 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 c. whole or low-fat milk
Mix all ingredients, stir well and let stand, loosely covered,overnight.
Do not refrigerate at any time. Divide into 3 glass jars; pass on to friends with the
bread recipe that follows:
Day 1: Pour 1 cup of the starter into a large glass bowl,cover loosely and
let stand.
Day 2-4: Stir with wooden or plastic spoon;cover loosely. Let stand.
Day 5: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk. Stir with spoon. Cover
and let stand.
Day 6-9: Stir with wooden spoon;cover loosely. Let stand.
Day 10: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk;stir with wooden spoon.
Day 11: Divide into 4 (1 cup) parts.
Friendship Bread
1 c. starter
2/3 c. oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3 eggs
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. baking soda
Combine all ingredients in order listed. Stir by hand until well-blended.
Stir in any additional fruit and or nuts which are optional. Pour into
generously greased 8-9 inch pan. Bake 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Cool
10 minutes then remove from pan. One loaf makes 16 servings.
