APPLE ROLLS WITH VANILLA SAUCE
This recipe came from Bill's niece, Mardelle in Des
Moines. This makes a wonderful dessert for company.

2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. milk
1 tsp. cinnamon
4 Tbsp. shortening
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. sugar
2 tsp. butter
sliced apples (as many as you
wish for this dish)
Mix and sift flour, baking powder, salt and 2 table-
spoons of sugar. Cut in shortening. Add milk and mix to a
soft dough. Roll to 1/3 inch thick and sprinkle with 1/2 cup
sugar. Arrange slices apples over dough and sprinkle with
remaining sugar and cinnamon. Dot with butter. Roll up and
cut in 1-inch slices. Place in greased baking dish and pour
cooled Vanilla Sauce over it and bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40
minutes. Serve with cream.
Vanilla Sauce:
1 c. sugar
2 Tbsp. flour
1 c. boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 Tbsp. butter
Mix sugar and flour and add boiling water. Boil until
clear. Add butter and vanilla, set aside and cool for a short
time. Pour over baked Apple Rolls.

APPLE ROLLS

1 1/2 c. self-rising flour,
sifted
3 Tbsp. shortening
enough milk to make a stiff
dough
3 1/2 c. chopped apples
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Mix flour, shortening and milk together. Let stand in
refrigerator overnight. Next day, roll dough on floured board
into a circle. Sprinkle with chopped apples, brown sugar and
cinnamon which is well mixed. Roll up like jelly roll. Cut
into 1 1/2-inch slices. Place in pan. Pour liquid over and
bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
Liquid:
1 stick margarine
2 c. water
1 1/4 c. white sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Let mixture get hot, stirring. Pour over apple rolls
and bake.
