Holiday glitz and glitter may put us in the mood for celebrating, but it might be fun to take a page from the past and create popcorn strings -- the updated version.
What To Do
Begin this activity by collecting and assembling what you'll need for your popcorn strings. Of course you'll need plenty of popcorn (try the large kernel variety) for stringing and eating. You'll also need cranberries, star anise (a spice), short cinnamon sticks, acorn shells, small seashells with a natural hole (if you can find them); tiny pinecones; grapefruit and lemon peels in large segments; lemon and apple slices stuck with whole cloves; and seed pods that can be strung.
Sort your supplies into separate baskets or bowls. Thread your needle (double) no longer than 16" and tie it in a knot. Begin to string, carefully pulling the fruit, spice, or popcorn slowly to the end. Make several short strings and tie them together to adorn your Christmas tree, mantel, or doorway.
Follow-Up Activity
After the holidays are over and you've untrimmed your tree, leave the popcorn strings in your yard or hanging from a tree for the birds to munch on.
** String cranberries also, fresh and they dry as they are on the tree..
