The issue with cartilage piercing is that it can go wrong more easily. Although it might heal in a straightforward way in a reasonable time, yet sometimes because blood supply is far lower it can be prone to complications.
However (though maybe partly for commercial reasons) inverness.corp on its site insists that it's just as safe to pierce ear cartilage as it is to pierce ear lobes.
Cartilage piercing should be done in a thoroughly sterile environment with a needle, not a piercing gun.
You're particularly interested in cartilage ear piercing. Have you already got any ear-lobe piercings, Jake? A lot of people will get a / some ear-lobe piercings before 'graduating' to the cartilage.
Anyway, keep us posted about what you decide.
