The crafty leprchaun stopped, smiled and then said in a quiet voice, "Ney, there young lasses. I will not go with you this fine day. But if ye will look over there...." They glanced over to where he had pointed, but, alas, he disappeared. If you don't watch them every second, they will escape! to make the leprechuan believe they had their own precious treasure and get him to chase them for a while, then , when he got close enough they would capture the little fellow and get their three wishes. The girls had to get their plan going right away. Susan ran home to get a large sack and Jill stayed behind to watch for the leprechaun. When Susan retuned she had the sack filled with a couple of forks, some toys off of her bed, some paperclips, rubberbands, and a BIG silver pot. All of these things, the girls knew, were unfamiliar to the leprechaun and therefore, to him, they were all little treasures. As the girls were giggling to themselves about their plan the leprechaun spied them and...

they thought it was just a dream. Then as they were making up their beds they found a gold piece under their pillows. They looked at each other with wonder in their eyes and realized that home and family was more important than riches. They kept the gold piece the rest of their lives and taught their children the importance of family love, but never told anyone where the gold piece came from.

When Susan and Jill grew very old, they each called all of their children to their bedsides. They told their children that they wanted to be buried with the gold pieces in their pockets. Susan's cdhildren did just that, but Jill's children thought that it was foolish to bury gold with their mother. So when Suan and Jill died, Jill's children kept the gold piece.

The leprachaun then appeared to Jill's two children. He also told them the story of the gold piece. And said that they each had one wish that would be granted. One asked for riches and the other asked to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The leprachaun told them they must return the goldpiece to him in order for the wishes to be granted. They readily gave him the gold piece expecting to have much, much more when their wishes were granted. The leprachaun told them to follow him. When they went outside there was a beautiful rainbow in the sky. The leprachaun started walking toward the rainbow as they followed. They walk and walked and walked until they were too tired to go any more. They said, "We must stop and rest." So they laid down on the ground and fell asleep. When they awoke the leprachaun has disapeared, and they could no longer see the rainbow. the were in a very strange land.
